Lethal Weapon is, to me, one of the best buddy cop movies I’ve ever seen. The pairing of Sgt. Martin Riggs and Sgt. Roger Murtaugh is a standout example of character chemistry in this genre, brought to life by the first-class performances of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

This movie blends high-tension action with humor, leaving you wanting more of these characters as the credits roll. From the start, it feels like their casting was divinely inspired. According to Wikipedia, casting director Marion Dougherty’s first suggestion was Mel Gibson and Danny Glover—a decision that ultimately gave us the iconic duo we saw on screen.

The two characters are polar opposites yet perfectly complementary. Murtaugh is the all-around good guy, a family man with three kids, while Riggs is a widower with suicidal tendencies and nothing to live for—until he meets Murtaugh. Together, they’re a force to be reckoned with. Cross them, and you’ll quickly regret it.

This first installment of the four-film series, released in 1987, introduces us to how Murtaugh and Riggs meet and how their bond develops. Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is a by-the-book cop at 50, enjoying a stable family life. In contrast, Riggs (Mel Gibson), at 38, is a younger, volatile, and suicidal cop no one wants to work with.

Despite their differences, these two must figure out how to work together to take down a gang of drug smugglers. On paper, it might sound straightforward, but on screen, it’s a journey filled with intense action and emotional depth as the duo navigates their wildly different approaches to life and work.

The music score in this movie is one you’ll love, composed by Michael Kamen, Eric Clapton, and David Sanborn. The jazz-infused soundtrack adds an exquisite layer to the film. One of my favorite scenes—“Spoiler Alert”—is when Riggs convinces a man threatening to jump from a building to appreciate life. Riggs, in his unpredictable way, gets the man to jump, but not before showing him how to confront his fears head-on.

After this film, the duo went on to make three more movies in the series, each just as captivating as the original. The franchise’s success lies in its ability to balance heart-pounding action with genuine emotional moments, making it a timeless classic in the buddy cop genre. Fans still celebrate the chemistry between Gibson and Glover, proving that some partnerships are truly unforgettable.
