Seeking a good movie,
check the next door.
Comedy-drama as a
genre is one I never really took a liking to. But the main problem for me with
this flick is the name. When a movie name is hard to remember, I just rate it
as one of those I know I’ll forget everything about in a few months.
Written by Lorene
Scafaria, who wanted to "tell the story of boy meets girl with a really
ticking clock," this movie tells a tale about the end of the world and how
people react to the news.
Imagine if you knew
the world would end in 21 days. What would you do?
Well, in this movie,
violence erupts everywhere, people are having random sex, orgies, doing drugs,
and the prices of stuff are unbelievable.
It was total chaos.
But in this chaos is the tale of two strangers who live in the same apartment
building: Dodge (Steve Carell) and Penny (Keira Knightley). The thing the two
have in common is they both need to get somewhere. Dodge wants to see his former
high school sweetheart, and Penny wants to get to England to see her parents.
The two venture off on
a journey that sees them get involved in a suicide/homicide where a truck
driver pays someone to murder him. They also meet Penny’s ex-boyfriend, who was
fully prepared for the apocalypse.
Their journey leads them to Dodge’s father, and in the end, the world is destroyed with the two falling in love.
It may sound like a healthy romantic story, but the thing is, the stuff that happened between point A (when they met) and point B (when they fell in love) was just too stupid to matter.
I too would like to be saddled with a lady when the world wants to end, but I don’t think that’s what I’d do. I’d rather be with a loved one, not a stranger I fell for during the wait for the end to come.
The movie seemed too long, but that wasn’t about the runtime. It was because, after a while, I got bored watching the two characters get in and out of trouble.
Steve Carell is a good comedian, but after the laughs of Get Smart and Date Night, he kind of lost me. Never was much of a fan of Keira, and I still stand on that ground.
Got some spare time? Why not try watching some oldies instead.
