I wish I could
say I enjoyed this movie more than I did the first Star Trek (2009),
but it didn’t match up to that, nor was it as good as the second, Star
Trek Into Darkness (2013).
The idea of adding some comedy into the mix was welcome, so they brought in
Simon Pegg to co-write the movie. Pegg, who also stars in the franchise as
Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, co-wrote and starred in the popular British
comedies Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007).
I enjoyed the
comedy between Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban). They
were fun to watch together, and there was never a dull moment when both were on
screen. But the comedy duo couldn’t push the movie over the edge to make it an
excellent third installment in this Star Trek reboot.
The movie
stepped up the role of women, as we get to see them play key roles. One woman
played a part in the demise of the USS Enterprise, and another (a warrior)
played a part in bringing the crew back together.
I’m not a huge
fan of Star Trek, but the first two installments were fun for me and got
me interested in seeing what J.J. Abrams had in store for the third. My biggest
disappointment with this third installment was hearing that Abrams was stepping
back from the director’s chair and Justin Lin (Fast and Furious director
from the third to the sixth installment) would be taking over.
If you’ve seen any of the Fast and Furious movies, you’ll expect
explosions and wild stunts—and this Star Trek wasn’t short on those.
Before the
movie’s release, Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in the Star
Trek movies between 1979 and 1991, and Anton Yelchin, who played the
ship’s navigator in this three-part reboot, both passed away.
This movie sees
the crew separated after they’re attacked by a villain named Krall. Krall wants
a weapon aboard the USS Enterprise for world domination—or annihilation.
The crew is
forced to break apart after Krall and his men tear the ship apart looking for
the weapon, nearly killing everyone onboard. Separated, the team starts to seek
each other out one by one, regrouping to take down Krall before he destroys the
universe.
If you’ve had
the privilege of seeing the first two Star Trek movies, you can go
ahead and see this one.
