Edge of Tomorrow is Tom Cruise’s version of Groundhog Day (1993), but with Cruise removing the romance and everything else while keeping the humor. There’s also a girl in this movie that both time-loop characters are trying to get—Cruise is trying to win her attention, while Bill Murray was trying to get her into bed. Did I forget to mention that in Cruise’s time-loop movie, the world is about to end, and there’s an ongoing alien invasion?

Edge of Tomorrow was a great film, and it was one movie I was eager to see how it would end. Time-loop movies are always fun to watch because the curious thing for us is how the characters are faring, since they’ve been able to live a particular day more times than the rest of us.

I recall Oblivion (2013), the last Tom Cruise film I saw, and it was an okay movie, but it made me feel like Tom Cruise was losing his star power, as Oblivion wasn’t well-received by viewers.

Edge of Tomorrow, on the other hand, was far better than Oblivion. This military science fiction movie made Cruise’s previous post-apocalyptic sci-fi film forgettable. The director and writers found a way to keep me interested in each day, as they made Cruise’s character, Major William Cage, experience different events each time. The writers didn’t bore you with the repeats; instead, you’ll find Major Cage rushing through the obvious to get to the new events he hasn’t yet experienced.

The movie is an adapted screenplay from the 2004 Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

Set in the near future, Earth has been invaded by an alien race that looks more like spiders. Major William Cage is a public relations officer selling the battle to the people, giving them hope, even though he’s never experienced combat. Cage is forced by his superiors to join the action and is thrown into a landing operation against the aliens.

During the fight, the inexperienced Cage kills an alien known as the Alpha. He dies in the process but finds himself in a time loop that sends him back to the day before the battle every time he dies.

Another thing you’ll love about this movie is the visual effects. More than nine visual effects companies worked on this film, from the war-front shots at the beginning to the aliens themselves. The design of the suits and the aliens is also a sight to see. The visual mastery and cinematography as the events unfold will catch you off guard.

This movie is wonderful. The only shame is that it didn’t make the money it was expected to at the box office, leading many to see it as a financial loss. That aside, if you haven’t watched Edge of Tomorrow, I think you should.
