Heartfelt,
uplifting, and very well-written in such a precise way to deliver to us the
person of Mr. Rogers. When I use the word "precise," I don’t mean to
explain how the movie shows us who Mr. Rogers is or was at that time—what I
mean is the idea of who they want us to see Mr. Rogers as. This is very good
for many of us, like me, who don’t have a clue who he is.
I’ve seen Tom
Hanks in a range of movies. He has the ability to deliver in such a way that
makes you forget you’re watching a movie. That power and ability are what make
him one of the best actors to have graced the silver screen. Here, he plays
Fred Rogers, and this movie is about the late television icon. Rogers created
and hosted the preschool television series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood,
which ran from 1968 to 2001.
This movie is
based on an article published in Esquire and written by Tom
Junod. The article is titled Can You Say ... Hero?
The movie shows everything that went on behind the scenes, which led to Tom
writing that article.
The plot
introduces us to Tom (Matthew Rhys). We meet his wife (they’ve been together
for eight years and just had their first child) and learn about his work as an
investigative journalist. We soon get to meet his other family members—his
sister and father.
Although Tom has nothing against his sister, he totally dislikes his father. At
his sister’s wedding, he sees his father after many years, and their meeting
leads to Tom getting punched in the face.
At work, he’s
given the task of writing a profile on Mr. Rogers. Tom is hesitant until he’s
told that Mr. Rogers is the only person of celebrity status willing to have an
interview with him.
What starts out as an interview soon brings out Tom’s investigative journalism
skills, as he begins to look into Mr. Rogers.
Then there are
times in this movie where we wonder who is interviewing whom.
Seen as one of
the best movies of 2019 and having received critical acclaim, the movie wasn’t
much of a box office splash.
It did, however, earn notable accolades, with Tom Hanks receiving much
recognition for his supporting role. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor
at the Oscars, Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and others.
The movie
delivers the needed feeling, and it’s a fun watch.
