The new addition
to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is better than the
first part from 2014. Get ready to witness some engineering and
scientific "facts" that make absolutely no sense, but it’s fun to
hear the words being thrown around and see the inventions being put together.
The movie is
entertaining and visually stunning. While the action scenes and CGI aren’t
always perfect, the one-liners and comedy will be well-received.
This whole
mindless, fun, and forgettable experience introduces four more characters from
the franchise: Casey Jones (played by Stephen Amell, who plays Oliver Queen
in Arrow), Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry), and the bumbling duo Bebop and
Rocksteady.
The movie also
focuses on the turtles learning to accept themselves for who they are and
working together despite their differences.
This is the
second movie in the proposed trilogy by Michael Bay, and I fear, based on
reactions and box office feedback, this may be the last in the series. The main
problem this movie faces is that while TMNT will be loved by
old-timers, newcomers unfamiliar with the "heroes in a half shell"
might find it hard to enjoy. For someone like me, it’s more about nostalgia.
The plot picks
up from the last adventure of our heroes. Shredder is being moved to a secure
facility to face punishment for the murders he committed. On the transport bus
are the duo Bebop and Rocksteady. When the Foot Clan, with the help of Baxter
Stockman, breaks Shredder out, Bebop and Rocksteady escape too.
Casey Jones is
one of the officers in charge of the transport, and he’s hellbent on catching
the escapees. While tracking down Bebop and Rocksteady, he runs into April
(Megan Fox), who’s being chased by the Foot Clan. During his heroic rescue, he
meets the latecomers to the "save April" party—our four turtles.
After a brief,
unrealistic freak-out, he joins forces with them to take down Shredder, who
appears to be working with another creature named Krang from another dimension.
Krang wants Shredder to help him open an interdimensional crack in space to
transport his Technodrome through.
Our heroes’
world-saving adventure leads them to find a way to become human, forcing them
to decide if that’s what they really want. They also have some face time with
the NYPD, who are equally freaked out by their presence.
You’ll enjoy
this film if you liked the first one and are a fan of the "heroes in a
half shell."
