Borrowing a line from Bilbo Baggins: This movie felt like butter spread over too much bread.

The movie starts with a long buildup to a very cliché story. A villain wakes up thousands of years after being double-crossed in his attempt to take over the world and decides, after his long slumber, to try again. We’ve seen enough villains try to rule the world, only to be stopped seconds away from achieving their dream, so I was expecting a better storyline than what this movie delivered.

The writers and director tried to build tension, but when the tale is as old as time, the only tension they managed to draw out of me came from the fun scene where Quicksilver saved everyone from an exploding house.

The movie has a wonderful cast who did their best on screen to make the emotional scenes resonate—kudos to them for that. However, Jennifer Lawrence was just there, with little to nothing to do except talk. While the other cast members had more to work with, given Lawrence’s screen time, you’d have expected her to have a bigger role.

The main issue with this movie is the storyline. It’s dull, uninventive, and unimaginative for an X-Men movie. That said, brace yourself for Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) cameo.

The movie’s CGI is on point, as are the well-choreographed fight scenes, but these elements only fully come to life during the final battle. So, you’ll have to hold your breath until then.

The plot revolves around En Sabah Nur, a mutant from ancient Egypt. While making himself immortal, the people turned on him and trapped him underground for thousands of years. He awakens in 1983 and sees the world as a wretched, weak, and lost place because he hasn’t been around to lead it. Instead of running for office like every pompous individual who believes they’re the answer the world has been waiting for, he decides to recruit four lieutenants, upgrade their powers, and use them to destroy the world and start over.

His lieutenants are Storm, Psylocke, Angel, and Magneto. He then takes an interest in Professor X’s powers and captures him.

Now that he has everything he needs to take over the world, it’s up to the young mutants from Professor X’s school to stop him.

In the end, I wished I had invested my weekend in something else, because this was a waste of time.
