Sleepless in Seattle is arguably one of the best romantic movies of the ’90s. The whole setup is innocent, sweet, and just lovable. The characters are magical, and the movie reignites the idea of love in you. It’s a smile fest—you’ll have a smile plastered on your face throughout this movie and wish for no better love story for yourself.

Meg Ryan delivered some amazing love stories in the late ’80s and ’90s before she faded from the spotlight. When Harry Met Sally (1989) is one of the best romantic movies you can ever see, and there she was cast alongside Billy Crystal. Here, she works with Tom Hanks, and together they created one of the best romantic pairings you could wish for.

The movie’s plot starts with Tom Hanks’ character, Sam, and his son Jonah at a gravesite where Sam’s wife is buried. Everyone is worried for Sam, including his son. Sam doesn’t seem to know what to do with life after his wife’s passing and believes it’s best to move to another state to deal with the pain.

His move to Seattle didn’t make much difference in his life, as he’s always awake, struggling to cope. His son, worried for his father, called a radio show to speak with a doctor who helps people with their relationship struggles. This call is what brought Sam’s existence to everyone’s attention.
Sam was made to speak at length to the doctor on the radio show, and women across America became interested in him.

On the other side, we have Annie (Meg Ryan), who is engaged to a man she finds stability with. She hears the call, and it makes her long for what Sam had with his wife. She starts to doubt if Walter, the man she’s set to marry, is right for her.

What brings these two together is Annie’s best friend, who, along with every other woman interested in Sam, sent him a letter. Annie’s letter was sent in her name by her friend. Jonah sees this letter and wants her for his father, even though Sam is now dating one of the women whose letter he found interesting. Jonah wrote back to Annie using his father’s name, and from then on… well, you have to see this movie again to remember.

After the credits start to roll, you wish you could get a glimpse of what life was like after they met. You want to see how they’re getting along—did they have children?
But that’s the power of this movie. It leaves everything to your imagination as we see them descend in the elevator of the Empire State Building.

The movie was a critical and commercial success and marked the second time Meg and Tom worked together. The movie’s screenplay earned both an Academy Award and a BAFTA nomination. The film also secured its place in the AFI’s 10 Top 10 as number 10 in the Romantic Comedy category.

We all know that Tom Hanks has been on top of the world in his movie career for years. I just wish the same could be said of Meg Ryan. You should watch Sleepless in Seattle again to reawaken the spirit of love in you.
