The animation is just as lame as the first movie—in fact, I preferred the first one to this. Like the original, this movie is about talking pets. It focuses on the lives of Max, a Jack Russell Terrier; Duke, a large, shaggy Newfoundland mix; and their owner, Katie. This time, there’s an addition to the family: Katie’s husband and son.

A Secret Life of Pets 2 is a CGI animation from Illumination Studios, a sequel to The Secret Life of Pets (2016) and the second feature film in the franchise. Notably, Patton Oswalt replaces Louis C.K. as the voice of Max. As I mentioned in my review of the first movie, this film feels like a Disney ripoff, particularly resembling Toy Story.

The movie’s weak point is that it runs three parallel stories simultaneously, never giving enough depth or focus to any of them. It feels like watching an animated TV series aimed at toddlers. Then, it awkwardly merges the stories together, with each contributing its strong points to the final main plot, which mostly involves pets and circus animals running around.

The movie follows Max and his overprotective nature. In the first film, he was overprotective of his owner, Katie, and had issues with Duke, the new dog Katie brought into the family. Now, he’s developed a similar overprotectiveness toward Katie’s son, Liam—a child he initially disliked but now wants to shield from the dangers of the world.

The family goes on a trip to a farm, where Max meets new animals and is introduced to Rooster, the farm dog. Rooster tries to help Max overcome his overprotective tendencies and gives him advice on facing his fears.

Meanwhile, the movie shifts focus to Gidget, who’s trying to learn how to act like a cat to rescue a toy she was entrusted with. Lastly, Snowball becomes obsessed with being a hero. His owner dresses him up as a superhero for their make-believe games before school, and Snowball sets out on a mission—in full hero costume—to save a tiger being forced to perform in a circus.

The movie will probably turn a profit, especially since its release date didn’t face much competition. But I hope this dull animated franchise ends here. The reality is, for me (even though my money makes up very little to the grand scheme of things) this is the last of the franchise I would see.
