Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

The movie was
fun, and the monster fights were just epic. The production that went into the
fights should not be overlooked. It was well done and masterfully crafted to
deliver the main attraction of the movie—Godzilla vs. Kong.
What would have
made this movie a lot better is if the story attached to the showdowns was
worth anything. There were two fights between the two titans, and there was a
third fight, but that would be spoiling things. The human element on the
Godzilla side was a waste.
The story is the
same old thing—humans trying to be the real apex and just getting screwed by
their greed for power. In fact, the story has so many holes and irrelevant
characters that there's no point in trying to follow it. It starts with a
facility where a former employee (Bernie) of a company named Apex Cybernetics
breaks in, only for the facility to be attacked by Godzilla. There’s an uproar
as people believe Godzilla’s attack was random. Madison (Millie Bobby Brown)
thinks otherwise. She gets her friend Josh to help her find Bernie. Bernie runs
a podcast talking about these apex giants, so together they break back into
Apex Cybernetics to figure out why Godzilla attacked and what’s going on in the
facility to have angered him.
On the Kong side
of things, Kong is being kept in a facility to protect him from being attacked
by Godzilla. You’ll need to use your common sense to figure this out, because
the movie doesn’t explain why anyone thought this. I guess because Godzilla
kills all titans, that's why the people thought this.
The people from
Apex Cybernetics were able to convince the people holding Kong to help them
find the home where these titans come from. They believe Kong will be able to
find this place if they just point him in the right direction.
The removal of
Kong from the facility led to Godzilla sensing him and coming after him, which
led to the first of the upcoming showdowns in the movie. You can guess that the
Apex people had other plans from the start, but watch the movie to discover how
that played out for them.
The movie’s big
selling point is the fights, but the big letdown is the lack of character
development. I wonder if the movie would have had the same outcome if you
deleted Madison, Josh, Bernie, and everyone else on the Godzilla side except
the Apex people. Because the only thing these characters did that was of any
significance was pour liquor into a rogue machine.
I’ve been
waiting for this showdown since it was teased. This movie is the fourth film in
Legendary's MonsterVerse, a universe they created, which has spawned three
earlier films. The first was the reboot Godzilla (2014),
followed by Kong:
Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla:
King of the Monsters (2019). The universe houses the big popular titans
in movie history—Godzilla and King Kong. This movie is the 36th film in the
Godzilla franchise and the 12th film in the King Kong franchise.
This movie was
originally set to be released in November 2020, but the deadly Covid-19
pandemic caused the movie to be delayed. Things got so that, after a theatrical
release, the movie also got a digital release on Warner Bros. streaming
platform HBO Max.
