Before the overexposure of Johnny
Deep and the much too much sequel of this franchise, lay in waiting in the past
was the first movie that launched it all – Pirates
of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
Writing this review years after
seeing all five movies in this franchise is cool because I have now seen the
best and the worse that Captain Jack Sparrow has to offer. This first movie of
the franchise from my view was the best movie the franchise could offer.
In this movie a star was born named
Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), he is a quirky, sluggish talking, antihero
and very smart pirate. Jack Captain’s a ship named The Black Pearl, which is tagged
as the fastest ship in the sea.
Falling in love with Jack was easy,
wanting him to triumph at every turn was what made fans to continue watching.
The story has Jack marooned on an
island for some time in waiting and escaped from that island by means which is
best known to him and to you if you have seen this movie before.
When he did escape, he went on to
steal a ship from the British Navy, to go in chase of his crew. Why?
Well it was his crew who placed him
on the island, when his second in command now Captain Barbossa staged a mutiny.
Jack was given a gun with a single bullet in it by his crew for him to use to
kill himself, he instead is saving it to kill Barbossa.
On the other side of civilization, Elizabeth
Swann (Kiera Knightley) is a lady of interest to a certain blacksmith whom she
saved when she was younger from the sea. One night the crew of the Black Pearl
attacked the town Elizabeth was, looking for a coin/medallion which Elizabeth
took of the blacksmith, William Turner (Orlando Bloom) when she saved him as a
young boy.
The crew of the Black Pearl kidnapped
Elizabeth thinking she is the child of Bootstrap Bill Turner, William Turner’s
father.
Figuring out why she was kidnapped
by listening to the crew as they talked amongst themselves, to save herself she
lied that her name is Elizabeth Turner.
The ship sailed off with her and
when night came she witnessed something dreadful. The men on the Black Pearl are
cursed and turn into something she didn’t expect when the moon light hits their
skin.
Disney decided to convert their theme
ride into a movie, and they were not pleased at first with the amount it cost
to produce the movie. After the release of the first movie, the critical and
commercial response birth the rest of the movies in the franchise, which all
saw a steady diminish in reception from critics.
