The coolest
animation in 2010 was Despicable Me. The movie was different—it starred a
bad guy who had no intention of becoming good, but the love of three girls
melted his heart. It’s not a mushy story but an exciting one that’ll leave you
wishing for a part two.
The cool thing is, there was a Despicable Me 2 (2013) and
a Despicable Me 3 (2017). To further cement the power of this
franchise, there was also a Minions (2015) movie. The Minions are
tiny yellow creatures who serve Gru and his evil schemes.
The movie’s plot
tells the story of Gru, a supervillain who takes pride in his antics and holds
a top position in the world of villainy. However, his status is threatened when
an unknown supervillain steals the Great Pyramid of Giza.
This makes Gru furious, and he decides to pull off a heist that will make the
Great Pyramid theft look like a joke. Gru’s plan? Steal the moon.
Yes, it’s an
animation, and while the idea of stealing the moon is unrealistic, remember
that everything about this movie is unrealistic.
To achieve his goal, Gru needs a loan from the Bank of Evil (yes, there’s a
Bank of Evil that funds truly diabolical plans) and a shrink ray from a secret
science base.
Gru and the
Minions successfully steal the shrink ray, but the new villain intercepts Gru
and takes it from him. The villain keeps the ray in his home.
Gru tries every trick to break into the villain’s home, but all his attempts
fail. During his surveillance, he notices three orphan girls who frequently
visit the house.
The girls—Margo,
Edith, and Agnes—are able to access the home because they sell cookies. The new
villain has a soft spot for kids, something Gru is willing to exploit.
Gru decides to adopt the girls and use their innocence to get into the
villain’s home, retrieve the shrink ray, and get back to his plan of stealing
the moon.
But Gru soon
learns that adopting children is no walk in the park.
The critical and
commercial success of this movie, along with the franchise it spawned, has left
many eagerly awaiting what’s next from Illumination Entertainment. With
masterful voice casting by Steve Carell as Gru, this movie has paved the way
for sequel after sequel, with Minions 2 and Despicable Me 4 on
the horizon.
