In 2009 came the
fun zombie film that set a high bar for the genre: Zombieland. While it’s not
as funny or insane as 2004’s Shaun
of the Dead, if you had to list top comedic zombie movies, this one
would definitely be right up there. Even when ranking overall zombie movies, Zombieland
holds its own as a standout.
One thing that
brought me back to revisit this movie was the release of its sequel,
Zombieland: Double Tap. The second part came out ten years after the
original, and knowing I was finally going to see it made me want to refresh my
memory on how the iconic four met.
What I love
about Zombieland is that even compared to the more dramatic or horror-focused
zombie movies, this one stands out. The writing pairs two unlikely duos in an
innocent standoff that evolves into an unforgettable adventure. The way the
movie briefly dives into their pasts to show what makes them tick, before
focusing on their journey and learning to trust one another, is simply worth
watching.
The movie is
narrated by Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), whose life we follow. He has created a
set of survival rules to navigate the zombie-infested world, and these rules
are introduced as the story unfolds. We learn there are 31 rules, with an
additional one added as the movie progresses.
At a grocery
store, the duo encounters another pair of survivors: Wichita (Emma Stone) and
her younger sister, Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). The sisters are con artists
who manage to trick Columbus and Tallahassee out of their weapons and vehicle.
Later, their paths cross again, and the sisters once again outsmart the men.
Eventually, the four decide to travel together, embarking on a journey toward
an amusement park.
Zombieland is an
awesome movie that was both a critical and financial success, which makes you
wonder why it took ten years for a sequel. Regardless, the original remains a
fun, memorable ride and a must-watch for fans of the genre.
