I have never been able to make it through to the end of this movie. I always start it, then lose interest, but the Covid-19 lockdown has helped me finally see movies I always wanted to finish, and Superbad is one of them. I finally got to see how it ended, and I still believe this movie is way over-hyped. I don’t think it’s the great comedy people claim it to be.

For me, the comedy is too reliant on cursing and sexual references. The plot is too weak, and the extremeness of everything else in the movie, like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader’s roles as cops, just adds to why I never understood why people see this as a classic.

That said, the movie is still a decent watch. The plot centers around two friends, Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera), who have been close since childhood. Now, in high school and about to graduate, people (including their classmates) are wondering how things will change when the dynamic duo splits. One thing these two are dying for is sex. They’ve had some experiences, like hand jobs and other things, but not actual sex.

Their obsession with sex shows in their eagerness to subscribe to porn sites and daydream about every girl being someone they could hook up with. Naturally, they’re not the most popular duo in school, and to make matters worse, their friend Fogell is even weirder than they are.

Seth has a crush on his home economics partner, Jules (Emma Stone). Jules thinks Seth is funny and invites him to a party she’s throwing now that her parents are away. Seth, of course, invites Evan to join. While they’re discussing the party, Fogell shows up and tells them he’s getting a fake ID made so he can buy booze.

Seth, stupidly, mentions this to Jules in hopes of impressing her. She then tasks him with bringing alcohol to the party. The rest of the movie follows the adventure Seth and Evan have while trying to get the alcohol and Fogell’s adventure with two cops.

The movie follows the typical formula of high school comedies where two people are really into each other, so I wasn’t surprised by some of the things that happened.

For me, this is just an okay movie. Even though it received critical acclaim and was a huge box office hit, I believe it’s more over-hyped than it should be.
